Chapter 1 – Rudra
Sun was gradually rising in the eastern sky. The sky was still dark but sunlight had already started to proliferate through the clouds and was illuminating a city named ‘Peeking Sun city’. This city was located in the lap of a huge mountain and it got its name from the fact that every morning, the city received rays of sunlight when the Sun would rise from behind the mountain. This mountain was considered sacred by the residents of ‘Peeking Sun City’ because they believed that deities used to live on this mountain and that’s how it got its name ‘Mountain of Deities’. There was a shrine located on the mountain and many believers frequently visited the shrine.
There was also a huge mansion present on the Mountain of Deities right next to the shrine. For centuries, Naga clan, a clan of priests, had lived in this mansion and they were also the protectors of the shrine.
At present, on the first floor of the Naga mansion, a 17 or 18 years old boy was sitting on his study table and reading a thick book. It was a big day for Rudra as he finally became a final year High School student and new classes were going to start from today. He didn’t know which section he would be assigned to, but right now, he was busy reading the book and didn’t seem to care about anything else.
It was his habit from childhood to get up early in the morning just to watch the sunrise. However today, he was fully focused on the book in his hand and didn’t seem to notice the beautiful orange colored sunrays entering his room through the window.
While he was busy reading, there was a ghostly figure of an old man floating behind him. The ghostly figure looked like a very old man, white hair, a long white beard on his face, and right now, he seemed curious and was trying to take a peek at the book that Rudra was reading.
“Hey brat, what are you reading so early in the morning?” The old man asked in an excited tone.
“Old man, even if I tell you, I doubt that you will understand.” Rudra turned around and replied in a calm voice.
“Ridiculous, who do you think I am? I am one of the strongest yogis.” The old man said in a proud manner.
“You are no longer a yogi now, you are just a ghost. Well I am reading a book on Quantum Physics. Now please go somewhere else, don’t disturb me anymore.” Rudra said in a firm voice and started to read again.
“Arrogant brat, I will definitely teach you a lesson someday.” The old man said in an angry voice then floated over to the bed, took a sleeping posture, and pretended to sleep.
Rudra slightly turned back his head, and from the corner of his eyes, he looked at the old man sleeping on his bed then said: “Weren’t you planning to accompany me on the first day of school this year?”
The old man immediately opened his eyes then floated up and suddenly arrived next to Rudra and said: “Of course I will accompany you. I just hope that like last year, Shia is again in your class.”
When Rudra heard his words, he frowned and said: “Old man, I don’t care whether she is in my class this year, just keep your perverted comments in check this year and at least try to keep your mouth shut in the classroom. I have had enough of your bullshit talks, if you have a thing for Shia, why don’t you go take rebirth first?”
The old man blushed then immediately said in a scolding manner: “Idiot, it’s not like that, I have told you before that Shia reminds me of my first love, though she has a rotten personality but she is very beautiful, just like a fairy.”
Rudra heard the old man’s explanation but didn’t say anything and continued to read the book.
Looking at the awkward atmosphere, the old man tried to change the topic and asked: “Why are you reading this book on Quantum Physics? From what I remember, this shouldn’t be in your course.”
The old man’s question attracted Rudra’s attention. He stopped reading then looked outside the window towards the beautiful mountain forest that was currently showered in morning sunlight and said: “Trying to find some answers, I just hope that I find them this time.”
The old man heard his reply and a serious look appeared on his face. But the next instant, a mischievous smile appeared on his face and he said, “Alright, when you find the answers, don’t forget to tell this old man. I am always craving for knowledge.”
Rudra nodded then resumed studying the book. A satisfied smile appeared on the face of old man then he again went back to Rudra’s bed and assumed a sleeping posture.
An hour later, Rudra stopped studying, took shower and got ready for school. He walked out of his room along with the old man hovering above him and knocked on the door of an adjacent room. After knocking few times, when no response came from inside, he entered the room and saw his elder brother Niran still sleeping.
“Brother, wake up!” Rudra tried to wake up his brother.
“What, Rudra, what happened, why are you waking me up so early in the morning?” Niran said while looking at his alarm clock. He was actually a college student and didn’t need to wake up early in the morning.
“Brother, tonight I am staying at a friend’s house, relay this message to mom and dad when they come back.” Rudra said in a hurry as he was getting late for school.
“What, you made a friend? Ha ha okay I will tell them.” Niran said and went back to sleep
The old man started to laugh loudly and said: “Your brother knows you well. Well aren’t you a bad little brother lying to your elder brother?”
Rudra didn’t say anything as he strictly followed a rule to not talk to this old man’s ghost or react to his comments in front of anyone. He went out of the mansion and started walking down the mountain road. He studied in ‘Peeking Sun High school’ which was 2 hours walk away from Naga mansion following the mountain road, but Rudra knew a shortcut through the forest which cut short this time by almost half.
After an hour, Rudra entered the school, checked the class allocation name list and found out that he got assigned to the same class as last time. The old man saw Shia’s name on the same list as Rudra’s and suddenly became happy and started flying all around Rudra. He ignored the old man and walked towards his classroom. His brother’s reaction was correct as he really didn’t have a single friend. He used to be a cheerful kid in his childhood but after entering middle school, he became aloof and started to keep to himself and seldom talked to anyone. He had always been a bright student and used to get good grades, which was the reason why teachers liked him and ignored his unsocial demeanor.
As usual, he went and sat on his favorite seat, the last seat next to the window. As he had originally planned, he came early to the class just to grab the last window seat and since no one had yet arrived, it became easy for him to monopolize his favorite seat. He took out the thick book out from his bag and started reading again.
“Rudra, you are such a boring guy. Aren’t you excited about your new class?” The old man asked and flew over to the adjacent seat.
“School is a place where you learn less from the books or teachers and more from people you meet and associate with. School prepares you for the big society outside. This is the place where you make friends, learn from each other, gain experience, laugh, love, hate, get jealous and even cry at failures. But, I am not interested in all that, so why do you expect me to be excited about a new class?” Rudra said in a calm manner while reading the thick book which was currently kept on the desk in front him.
The old man heard his reply and sighed then said: “Sometimes, I feel that you are over matured for your age. Fine, then what are you interested in?”
Rudra opened his mouth to say something when his attention was suddenly diverted towards a slender figure of a girl entering the classroom. In the classroom, the rays of reddish sunlight were entering from the eastern facing windows, and since Rudra was sitting next to the window, when she entered the classroom, her figure was illuminated properly by the sunlight coming from the windows on her opposite side. She was a beautiful girl, cute baby-like face, big eyes, and well proportioned curves complimenting her slender physique, long black hair spread on her shoulders, and currently bathed in sunlight, her figure simply looked like the silhouette of a fairy. Rudra was enchanted for an instant after witnessing such an unforgettable scene but soon gained his composure and turned his gaze towards the book.
The old man immediately shouted: “Brat, look, there’s such a beauty in your class and she is even more beautiful than Shia!”
Rudra didn’t react, neither did he say anything, he just continued to read.
After entering the classroom, the beautiful girl seemed confused about where to sit. Although, except Rudra, no one was there in the classroom, but she was still hesitating to take someone else’s seat by mistake, as she wasn’t aware of the fact that seating arrangements weren’t followed in this school. Anyone could sit anywhere and students mutually decided the seating arrangement.
The girl thought for a moment then walked up to Rudra and stood next to his seat. Rudra lifted his head and looked at her, then immediately thought something, and said while pointing his finger to the window seat right in front of his own seat: “Look, I know that this last window seat is the best seat in this classroom, but I like to sit here, if you want, you can take the one ahead of mine.”
Rudra thought that she wanted the last window seat but he was unwilling to give up his favorite seat so he pointed to the seat in front of his own seat.
The girl looked at the seat his finger was pointing towards then immediately smiled and put her school bag on the window seat in front of Rudra’s seat and sat down. She was happy that the first boy she met in this new school was not a rude guy. She was nervous, thinking how things would be in this new school, so she came early in the morning to get used to the new environment.
She had studied in an all-girls boarding school since childhood and felt insecure around boys, but this boy was different than other boys she had met before. He wasn’t looking at her the way other boys looked, in fact, he wasn’t looking at her at all, though he didn’t seem like a cheerful guy, but he still understood her problem without her asking, not just that, he didn’t try to force a conversation on her like most boys used to do.
Rudra looked at the back profile of this beautiful girl then thought, “Why does she look so happy?”
Suddenly, the old man appeared right in front of Rudra, as if trying to block his vision with his own transparent form, and said in a loud voice while pointing at the girl: “You seem interested in her, well it’s understandable because she is so beautiful and adorable. Just look at those plump and…..”
Before the old man could finish the sentence, Rudra looked viciously at him, and he abruptly stopped.
“Don’t be mad, I just got carried away.” The old man said and flew a bit away from Rudra.
Rudra took out a pen from his pocket then wrote down something on his left palm: ‘I think I told you to keep your mouth shut in the classroom and not pass on perverted comments.’
The old man read what Rudra wrote on his left palm, and didn’t say anything, just gestured as if saying ‘Fine’ and flew over to the seat right in front of that beautiful girl’s seat, then a lecherous look appeared on his face while looking at her.
Rudra sighed then glanced at his left palm and the characters instantly vaporized and vanished in thin air.
The old man was looking at her smiling face and thought in his heart: “Looking at the current smiling appearance of this girl, my intuition says that she seems to have misunderstood something about Rudra. If she is thinking that he is a nice and helping guy then she is highly mistaken. Only I know the true secret of this monster in human form.”
After sometime, the students started to arrive and within half an hour, the whole classroom was filled with people. The beautiful girl was getting insecure after seeing so many boys but she determined herself to bravely go through this. But, soon, everyone seemed to have noticed the beautiful new transfer student, especially boys. People started to discuss about her amongst themselves but Rudra was simply unaffected from all this, as if he was in his own world, quietly reading his book.
At this time, a pretty girl stood up from her seat, located in the front row, and walked towards the backside of classroom. She had a slim figure like that of a supermodel and her face was decorated with the locks of her beautiful brown hair. Three other girls were also following her like her lackeys and were looking maliciously at the new girl. She stopped next to the seat of the new girl and said in an arrogant tone: “Hi, I am Shia, I was the class president last year and most probably this year as well. You are a new student right, what’s your name?”
The new girl was startled when Shia and three other girls suddenly walked up to her and started talking. She instinctively stood up and nervously tried to search something in her school bag, but her hands were trembling and the school bag fell from her hands on the floor. When Shia and the other girls saw this, they suddenly started to laugh which attracted the attention of everyone. Rudra was observing all this from the time Shia and her lackeys approached the new girl as he was well aware of her rotten personality and arrogant demeanor. She was the type of girl who couldn’t allow anyone to challenge her beauty or status and this new girl’s beauty and sudden popularity had certainly made her jealous, so he was kind of expecting this to happen sooner or later.
Shia laughed then immediately bent down and picked up the new girl’s bag and said: “What’s with this school bag, it’s so ugly and old fashioned. You should look at my school bag which is so fancy and costly, nothing like this cheap stuff.”
After saying, she tossed it towards the other three girls. A tall girl caught the school bag and started inspecting the things inside. The new girl was shocked at this and was so nervous that her eyes reddened and it seemed that she would cry any time. Everyone was looking at her pathetic self which made her feel an unbearable pain in her chest. She wanted to do something but didn’t know what to do!
Shia looked at her and said while laughing, “We take your school bag and you start to cry? ha ha how pathetic, at least try to say something!”
The tall girl who was inspecting the school bag threw the contents on a desk then inspected for a moment and said in a loud voice, “She is really weird, she writes her name on all her things. And there is a toy in her bag as well.”
The tall girl took out a chibi panda toy and tossed it towards Shia, who caught it then started laughing and asked: “What’s her name?”
The tall girl said, “Soumya.”
Shia was enjoying this situation very much. She initially thought that this new girl would be a strong rival but she turned out to be so pathetic. Everyone in the class was watching this but no one wanted to offend Shia, a rich and influential personality, who was famous for ruining the lives of those whom she didn’t like.
When the new girl saw her things scattered in front of everyone, she felt even more pathetic at her helplessness. This panda toy was a precious gift from her father and she kept it with her at all times because it gave her mental support in desperate situations. She tried to take back the panda toy but Shia pushed her back and she fell on her seat.
The old man rushed to Rudra’s side and said in a worried tone: “Brat, she is in trouble, do something!”
Rudra was looking at this scene for some time but didn’t want to act because it could make this new girl’s situation even worse in the class, because if he helped her right now then the whole class would start treating her like a pampered princess who needed others to fight for her. She needed to take an initiative and try to defend herself, and only then he would be able to help her, that’s why he was waiting for her to retaliate or at least say something. But why was this girl not saying anything? Was she such a timid person that voice wasn’t coming out of her vocal cord, or, perhaps the voice couldn’t come out of her vocal cord.
Just then, the tall girl said: “Shia, there are hearing aids in her bag.”
When Rudra heard this, all the things suddenly linked in his mind. So that’s why she didn’t greet him in the morning, she never uttered a single sound and she couldn’t retaliate against Shia and her group. She actually couldn’t hear or talk!
Shia looked towards Soumya and said: “Are you perhaps deaf?”
Soumya couldn’t figure out what everyone was talking but she knew a bit of lip reading and clearly read the question weaved by Shia’s lips and nodded in reply. Shia was crushing her precious panda toy in her clutches, which immediately made her mad, and this actually gave her the resolve to fight back and a determined look appeared on her face. She stretched out her hand as if asking for her panda toy to be returned to her. Rudra looked at the determined look on her face and a strange smile appeared on his face. When the old man looked at strange smile on his face, he sighed inwardly.
Looking at the determined look on Soumya’s face and her stretched hand, Shia lost her temper and lifted her hand and was about to throw the panda toy out of the window, but Rudra suddenly stood up with so much force that it startled her and she lost balance and fell on the floor. In a blink of an eye, he suddenly appeared in front of the tall girl, and in a flash, he snatched Soumya’s bag from her hand.
The tall girl felt a heavy pressure on her body and squatted down, and then he viciously looked towards the other two girls with a beastly look in his eyes. The two girls were scared to death and tried to step back, but they couldn’t move as if their bodies had frozen. Rudra then started stuffing Soumya’s things into her school bag. This happened so fast that no one could get any time to understand what was going on.
Everyone had baffled looks on their faces!
After stuffing the things in the school bag, he then slowly walked towards Soumya, who also had a baffled look on her face, and handed over the school bag to her along with the panda toy that he had already snatched from Shia’s hands when she was falling, then took out a pen from his pocket and wrote down something on his left palm and showed it to her: ‘You are not as timid as I thought.’
